He was recently spotted with a distinctive brown ponytail at a Doctor Who screening in London.
But David Tennant’s new hairstyle has less to do with fashion and more to do with theatrics as he returns to the stage in a production of Richard II from the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The 42-year-old actor takes the lead as ‘a monarch ordained by God to lead his people’ in Gregory Doran’s take on the history play, believed to have been written by William Shakespeare in 1595.
Tickets for the run are being snapped up, with live screenings also expected to take place at selected cinemas around the world on November 13.
In a first glimpse of Tennant in action, the actor is seen fully robed and with his long brown extensions as he takes on the challenging role.
Richard II is a man ruined by vanity and with no comprehension of his own limitations as a human being. Tenant's Richard II has been described as 'fearless, intelligent and poignant' following its opening night in Stratford-Upon-Avon on October 10.

Last month the actor was spotted arriving at the British Film Institute for a special Doctor Who screening in honour of the show's 50th anniversary, while attempting to cover his new hair extensions - a necessity for the role - with a grey baker boy cap.
As a result, fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the actor's new locks.
Ashley Thomas wrote: 'I can't deal w/ this whole David Tennant ponytail situation right now. I just want to chop it off. #lessismore.'
@EmyKay13 added: 'David, work that ponytail even if you do look ridiculous #werkitbabay #DavidTennant.'
Mane man: Tennant's run will continue until January 25, when the show closes at London's Barbican Theatre
And Sarah Day added: 'I keep getting distracted by David Tennant's ponytail and it makes me giggle. #doctorwho #davidtennant.'
However, the Twitter user @David_Tennant, which provides up-to-date news on the star, was quick to dispel people's questions over the new hair, writing: 'To answer all the queries David Tennant has hair extensions for Richard II (10 Oct - 25 Jan). His hair will be loose (no ponytail) on stage.'
At the British Film Institute event, which screened the Tenth Doctor episodes The Stolen Earth and Journey's End, Tennant was also put under the spotlight answering questions from Justin Johnson, while the audience looked on in amazement at his new mane.
David is to perform a total of 85 performances wearing his new 'do, staring at Stratford-Upon-Avon before moving to The Barbican Centre from December 9.source
